Frostwire freezes at 31%

Frostwire freezes at 31%

Postby Stringer207 » Tue Apr 24, 2012 4:52 pm

While loading up Frostwire, it stops at 31% (Loading Search Window) for like a good 5-10 minutes and then will randomly come up. But once it's up, I can't search for anything and chat keeps saying "Network problems are preventing you from connecting to the chat services"

I have Frostwire 5.3.5
Java 6, update 31
Windows 7
Using 64-bit system

Ive tried uninstalling and re-installing both java and frostwire and even using revo uninstallation and the same problem keeps occuring. Tried restarting my computer after each download as well. I would very much like some help

Sounds like you've been reading the forum... you've done the basics. <sigh>
Ok, you should check: Firewall allowing FrostWire and Router allowing ports and/or set for UPnP

Make sure FrostWire is completely terminated, and go into the windows fire wall advanced>inbound rules and delete all references to FrostWire. What we want to do is force windows to ask for connect permission on the next execution. That way, all of the parameters should be correct.

If you have some other firewall make sure that it's allowing FrostWire, also make sure your virus program or malware monitors are not killing it.

If all of that is good AND you are not behind a router, you might suspect that your ISP is blocking the standard FrostWire port. In that case you can change it in tools>options>advanced>firewall by selecting manual port forward. I've been using 16800, but supposedly my ISP isn't blocking anything. You could try 80, 443, 900, 110, or 79, which is the old finger server.

Make one change at a time until, hopefully, you resolved your issue and let us know what happens. Such feed back can be valuable for helping others. FYI: I have the same configuration as you.

Shutdown frostwire completely

Renaming the c:\Users\YourName\.frostwire5 folder to ".frostwire5-backup", this will make FrostWire think it's a fresh install next time you start it and you will "loose" all your settings and ongoing transfers, however you're going to be more likey to not freeze, maybe something got corrupted in the search index database after an upgrade from a very old version or something.

Let us know if this helps. (you will still have your settings on .frostwire5-backup, you can try to then shutdown FrostWire and little by little copy some of the files that keep the settings you used to have. In the process you might even find out which file (if you do it one by one and reset, painful I know) is screwing you up.

If it's still freezing then we gotta try something else.

Hahahah alright I got it working again. So looking into my McAfee Security Center, which is my anti-virus, I found Frostwire in my firewall settings and for some reason the "Frostwire Launcher" was set to blocked. So I set it to outgoing and opened Frostwire and sure enough everything started running like usual and I get search results and everything.
Thank you for your time :)

Thank you for the feed back. In the future you will probably see that advice repeated, since it did lead to a solution. Your experience will help others.

Wish I could +1 answers here and get them all the way to the top like on Stack overflow.

Really good to know that this was the cause, we probably have a really long time out that we should avoid there.

I'll have to get that McAfee product and replicate the issue so we can fix it.

I'm having the same problem. I read through the forums first to try and find a solution and have tried the following.
I'm using Windows 7 premium
frostwire 5.3.5
java 7.4
I used Revo Uninstaller and removed Frostwire and Java - then used the links provided in the forums to download all the latest stuff. That seemed to have done the trick but it did get stuck at 31% for a long time before opening and I was able to download everything fine.
Today when trying to start a new download, it searched just fine but when initializing the download it wouldn't run (it kept saying Error, no matter what I chose) so I shut the program down to restart it (this helped in the past).
When restarting its got stuck on 31% again.
I've checked that both the Windows and Kaspersky firewalls allow Froswire and everything is as it should be.
I've been using Frostwire for years and the ISP has never blocked it before and I've never had to change any settings manually nor and did I change anything before the problems started.
I've never had this problem before, it worked perfectly fine in the past.
Any help is appreciated.

You've done all the right things, but there is also this:
An error on the Download Directory usually means it is not available.
I'd guess that your download directory as specified in
tools>options>Bittorent Torrent save folder
is not valid. Make a folder and point to it by using the browse function.
See if that helps.

Also:
In search types: select torrents unselect all others
Refine results: check isohunt and TPB, uncheck all others.
In the search box (the little magnifying glass): type UBUNTU
Press enter or click the magnifying glass
What happens?

I've created a new folder on my desktop and set it as per your first istruction and it still wouldn't work.
I did the second thing also and when I press enter it gives me 120 results.

Sounds like there was a problem with one of the indexing sites. Do take your download folder off of you desktop, though. If you have a second or external drive, that would be a better choice. The system drive is very busy, and if you have a problem and have to reload, all user files there go away.. NOT good.

I originally had it on an external drive and have moved it back there however it still won't download. It searches fine but nothing is actually happening, it just sits there. I don't get it, I downloaded fine before the weekend, all the trouble started yesterday. Any other ideas?

Insure FrostWire is completely terminated, and go into the windows fire wall advanced>inbound rules and delete all references to FrostWire. What we want to do is force windows to ask for connect permission on the next execution. That way, all of the parameters should be correct.

If you have some other firewall or security center,(such as McAfee Security Center or zone alarm, etc.) make sure that it's allowing FrostWire, also make sure your virus program or malware monitors are not killing it.

Also: under tools>options>advanced>network interface, make sure there is no check in use specific network interface... UNLESS you are sure you need it, then select the appropriate item.

I have tried everything and it still doesn't work. :( I do have 2 questions though.
Not to sound ungrateful for all the help, but what was the point of the "UBUNTU" search? I'm a bit unclear as to what this was in aide of.
And why do I need to now use a manual port whereas, I've never in the 2 years that I've used Frostwire changed a single setting? Is it perhaps not possible that there is another problem that has nothing to do wih the ports? I still downloaded last night with random port that Frostwire recommends.
This is becoming extremely frustrating after using this program for 2 years with no issues and now to have all these problems all at the same time.

I hear you and I understand! Ubuntu is well seeded and blazingly fast. If you can't download ubuntu, you can't download ANYTHING! If you can download it, the problem is not frostwire, but the torrents you are attempting to download.

Obviously, something has changed, either on your computer, with your connection or with your ISP. FrostWire works on Win7. I have the latest rev and the latest java and it is working, so I know that frostwire is good. Therefor, the problem is the software, such as virus checker, firewall, etc. OR your ISP blocking ports. The changes I suggested should point to the area of concern or bypass it, in the case of the ISP.

That would seem to leave your firewall or virus checker. At this point, I seem to be out of ideas.

Post back to get an unread status for HOBO or Gubatron, or some other mod... I'm tapped out!
:? :x
