FrostWire 5.3.4 OUT (and 5.3.5 on the way)

FrostWire 5.3.4 has one new feature, YouTube video search and downloads. It's now Windows 8 compatible and lots of issues on the Windows installer were fixed that didn't let many users complete the installation process. The new windows installer will make sure you're running Java 7, with improved java performances that make FrostWire even faster.

It also updated the Spanish translation among other things, here's the full changelog.

frostwire (5.3.4) stable; urgency=high
* New frostwire.exe launcher with extended Unicode support now able to
handle .torrent file names with extended Unicode characters.
* Windows build is Windows 8 compatible.
* Windows build will prefer Java 7 if not JRE is found.
* Improvements when sending files on a local area network via magnet link
or send file to friend.
* Bug fix when opening magnets from a website when FrostWire
was already running.
* User experience improvements on the transfer manager.
* Spanish translation update (93% translated)
* YouTube video search and download support.

-- FrostWire Team Mon, 26 Mar 2012 18:00:00 -0500

FrostWire 5.3.5 is now being built, it betters Android integration, now you will be able to send file from the desktop to android devices with drag and drop on the Library tree.
Translations for Dutch, French and Norwegian have been updated so far and more translations should be updated before the next release.

==
FrostWire 5.3.3 OUT!

Serious improvements in search: Fixes 100% CPU usage issues and search query analysis has been improved for better matches.

Upgraded to support the new TPB magnet only search results.

Improved Magnet link support, now with UT_METADATA BitTorrent extension support (we've sent our patch to the Azureus/Vuze team so that all Vuze clients can also have better magnet link support)

==
FrostWire 5.3.2 out for Windows and Mac (Linux build coming very very soon, doing some tests with Java 7 on Linux)

(Also FrostWire for Android 0.9.5 is out http://frostwire.com/android - Test together if you can, it's a lot of fun)

Please test throughly on your Operating system. The quicker we get bugs or a thumbs up from you guys, the faster we can release to the public.

Here’s what’s coming on the next update.

Better search results and usability Users coming from FrostWire 4 have complained about ease of use and search results. We’ve made our search algorithm and user interface friendlier so that you won’t get lost finding the files that you need. We’re bringing a bit of the FrostWire 4 feel to the search form and you’ll have even more control of the search results you see as they are retrieved.

Sending files to friends. No need to upload your files to sketchy websites that are a pain in the ass for your friend to find the download button among so many ads. Not only you can send files as big as your computer can hold, you can also send entire folders and subfolders. The more friends you send your files, the faster they get it because they collaborate. You and your friends make a little cloud when sending files to each other with FrostWire.

Mobile Integration You can now browse, stream or download the files made public by Android devices nearby. Best part, no cables necessary. Samsung users on Mac will love this, as we’ve experienced impossible to fix issues with the Galaxy Tab 10″ which just won’t share files even with the Kies app that Samsung provides.

FrostWire for Android implements an open, simple, HTTP/JSON based file sharing protocol that ANYBODY can work with, so we hope to see Web developers, and why not even iOS developers making clients that can talk to FrostWire for Desktop and FrostWire for Android. And if nobody builds them we’re trying to free some time later in the year to make a light version of FrostWire for iPhone/iPod/iPad so that you can send files from your iOS device to your PC, Mac, Linux or Android devices, all wirelessly (no need for USB and iPhoto, no need to cut your videos or to downgrade their quality to upload them to youtube if all you want is to send that HD video to your mom’s)

Those and a lot of other features and fixes are ready. If you cannot wait to try these, you can always download the sources and build FrostWire yourself in two steps (ant; ./run)

Re: Quick update on the upcoming release of FrostWire 5

Postby gubatron » Wed Feb 08, 2012 9:29 pm

We are almost done with an entirely new skin called "Fueled". It has major improvements in the look and feel of the application.

We've done so many changes that we decided not to call it 5.2.x anymore, this one totally deserves that 5.3 in front.

We hope to have a release candidate 5.3.0 out before the end of the weeks for you guys to try. It will also be release in tandem with the next generation of FrostWire for Android. Both products complement each other, if you have an android you should def. give it a try so you can easily move files from your Android to your Desktops. (integration the other way around will be coming in further releases)

I've seen so many products be improved to the point of simplification to where they lose basic functionality. To date, I've never found a problem with the search. It simply works as you configure it to work. If you take the time to understand the underlying principles, it is no big mystery. Now, faster would be nice, but I'm getting enough results to allow me to find what's out there. Only a couple of times have I had to resort to google.

What I'd like to see is more functionality in the handling of torrents. A default load directory is good, but it would be very advantageous to be able to specify a target directory at torrent start time.

It would be nice to able to see connected peers on a torrent and to have some control there.

I would have liked to see more information on trackers, but with DHT become so prominent, that may not be all that useful anymore.

FrostWire is a good product, and hopefully, getting better. I, frankly, do NOT want a tremendously integrated environment. I want a TORRENT CLIENT and SERVER that does that job very well. I can manage my own players, video devices, and folders. I want a torrent program to serve torrents... what a concept!

I moved to FrostWire because of "improvements" to a competing product. Yes, it was bad enough to make the learning curve worth the effort. Please!!! Do not over improve! Not every suggestion needs to be take seriously or is useful in the larger scheme.

I hear ya loud and clear. More advanced torrent features are coming.

This release is both a maintenance release that fixes a lot of what is there already and attempts to make usability a lot better. Fixes in search will be felt we're sure.

But even though we care deeply about advanced bittorrent features, we also need to hear the users that are not so advanced and make their experience easier.
We still have a huge list of things to fix

Attached a screenshot of the new fueled skin. Fixing a few more bugs and we'll release, hopefully today the RC, tomorrow the full blown thing if the RC is stable.

That is looking good!

And I'm not even suggesting that the basic interface should NOT be simple. I'm really asking that some of the nuts an bolts functionality be made available, under the hood, so to speak, but accessible to those who wish to use it.

I'm using FrostWire because I like it.

I had frostwire and opened it and it said If I wanted the update to the 5.3.2 and I said yes Now it is on my PC & it doesnt work properly so I tried to uninstal it & it wouldn't let me so I went into my add & remove programs and it would not uninstall so than I closed it tried to uninstal again from Frostwire dropdown inprograms no go so I went back to add & remove and it wasnt even listed so I thought well maybe it was uninstalled but it was still there & not loading correctly so I tried to restore my PC to before the update and my PC said it had been restored successfully. I went to start than programs and it is still there and will not go away. I cant find anything on uninstalling it on the Frostwire web page or anywhere else when I Google it. I need HELP! it isn't loading properly & I can't get it off or change it in anyway. Will someone HELP me PLEASE?

Completely remove all traces of Java and Frostwire. To do this use Revo Uninstaller or a similar program since Windows uninstaller in the Control Panel fails to do the job thoroughly. Revo will locate additional related files which need to be removed.

There is also a portable app Portable -Scott

Before doing this ensure you have a back up of the files in your save and shared folders, (if you have any from Frostwire 4) as well as your Torrent Data folder, or at least remove them to your desktop or somewhere similar, just to be on the safe side. The Torrent Data folder's location is given at Tools > Options Bit Torrent > (Basic) > Torrent Data Save Folder. The other folders are in that FrostWire folder. There is also a Torrents folder there.
You will need to keep the .torrent files in there if you want to continue seeding your torrents, but if you are having the problem you describe it would be best to delete the .torrent files, and start again with a clean slate.

Then install Java from HERE using the offline installer and finally Frostwire from the FrostWire.com link above.

Please careful with Windows installers being served outside the official mirrors:

frostwire.com
frostclick.com
brothersoft.com
sourceforge.net
download.com

The update is out, and the opportunists are out there to get innocent people with their fake sites and misleading tweets.

If you already have FrostWire, just install the update it automatically downloads for you from a trusted torrent.

Here's what your windows installer should have inside

I've been using 5.3.2 and as it is, it should be completely out...I have been using it with win XP and win 7, both fully up to date and with no other problems on both computers...I have plenty of ram...etc. I am getting graphical hang-ups, double images and blank spaces in the Frostwire window. Frostwire also refuses to remember settings when using the tools menu to set font size and skins, for example...I have to reset everything each time I boot up. At one time I got a double frame image in both the upper compartment (advertising window and search results window as well as the downloads window.) Frostwire then basically froze up on me although downloads continued.....I actually thought I had an on-board virus, but a thorough scan proved me virus-free. This evening on the win 7 computer, only the downloads compartment and a portion of the upper left bar were displayed. The problems appear to be worsening since during the first week of use, Frostwire only refused to remember settings as mentioned above...now the whole screen shows discontinuous and super-imposed windows and graphics when search is initiated. The screen interface then may or may not slowly (I mean very slowly) correct itself if I wait long enough. Closure works, but then rebooting may or may not give a clean image. Rebooting the computer will, but problems recur when search is initiated again, then I get variable results...very unpredictable. I sure liked the previous version....Thanks

Quick question: What screen resolution are you using on the problem machines?
