NEW SCAM: “Internet Copyright Law Enforcement Agency”

Postby gubatron » Mon Feb 25, 2013 11:35 am

Do not fall for this scam.
http://torrentfreak.com/scammers-extort ... nt-130222/

It seems the scammers have managed to either work with ISPs or hack them to illegally obtain mailing addresses of their customers (which they'd need a subpoena to do so),
then they send people a certified letter with very scary legal language pretty much asking for money or otherwise they'll put you in jail.

It's a confirmed scam, and once it got media attention it seems the company closed up shop. If this company is caught there's a lot of illegal things they were doing it seems (ilegal extortion, probably electronic crime, privacy violations, etc.)

If you get a letter like this, leave a message below with the name of your ISP, we'd like to provide TorrentFreak.com writers a list of ISPs that have been compromised by these criminals.

If you know anything about this company, please try to contact TorrentFreak.com to let them know.

What was described is a SCAM, but if you are discovered downloading copyright material, you are subject to legal action. That is true no matter WHAT product you use. It is what you do, not what you do it with!!!!

Read some discussion of this: http://catfangz.com/frostwire/Copyright.html
Then make your own decisions on what you should or should not do.
