media player wont play my downloads??????

PLease someone help me. I am new to the whole Bitorrent thing. Ive figured it out some but, when i tried to play them its states media player cannot play this format type. whats up with that?? Now question... is it possible that it would not play because the file had not completed the download because it shows up on my cd burner list and iit gives me an option to play however, it relays the message i stated above.. Someone help me soon.
