Frostwire 4.20.6 not fully compatible with Mac 10.4

Postby mesonychoteuthis » Sat Jun 05, 2010 1:36 pm

Hi all.
I have been successfully and happily using 4.18.3 for quite a while on my Mac (Tiger, 10.4.11). :D Today, I discovered on Frostwire website that 4.20.6 is supposed to be compatible with Mac 10.4, so I downloaded it.

As far as dowloading music by itself is concerned, it seems to work. But each and every time I tried to start the integrated player in order to check that the song I am downloading is the right one, it worked as well... but Frostwire suddenly quitted after a couple of seconds!

After many unsuccessful attempts, I finally re-downloaded 4.18.3, with which everytning is OK as previously, but it is a bit of a pity not to be able to use the latest improved version. Should anybody have an idea (and maybe a solution) about this problem? Thanks a lot.

Hi,

I am afraid Frostwire 4.20.x is not fully compatible with OS X 10.4.11

I am in the same boat, and the stated requirements for 4.20.6 should indeed be changed,

I was not aware of the problem with the Frostwire player until now since I always have it disabled, and I use iTunes to play all my files and previews. I have just enabled the player and can confirm exactly what you describe, although launching files in iTunes presents no problem. I'm not sure if this is a fixable problem.

The Torrent function is useless with Frostwire 4.20.x so use of an alternative Torrent client is necessary. This is due to the fact that Frostwire 4.20.x uses the Vuse/Auzureus Torrent client core which requires Java 1.6 which is unavailable to Mac Tiger, and I believe, any Mac not using the Intel processor and 64 bit capability

I do find however that subject to these limitations, Frostwire 4.20.6 does work extremely well on Mac OS X Tiger, so we are in a slight quandary over exactly what to recommend in this case.

Personally, I recommend Frostwire 4.20.6 for mac Tiger, but the Frostwire player must be disabled, and the fact that it will not work with Torrents should be noted.

I presume this means that the built in updates for the Hostiles file which prevents connections to many bad hosts, which are made via torrent downloads will not happen with our set up will not happen, but I must check that out.

I think the number of features that are not working anymore on 10.4 merit we change the requirements.
Do not pay for FrostWire, it's 100% Free, get it from the official website only
