The basic check list for FrostWire problems include:
DO check java, the fire wall, and any security programs you may have running.

Insure FrostWire is completely terminated, and go into the windows fire wall advanced>inbound rules and delete all references to FrostWire. What we want to do is force windows to ask for connect permission on the next execution. That way, all of the parameters should be correct. If you are using some other firewall, do what it takes to force it back to it's original state, relative to FrostWire so that you can get a clean start.

If you have some other firewall or security center,(such as McAfee Security Center or zone alarm, etc.) make sure that it's allowing FrostWire, also make sure your virus program or malware monitors are not killing it.
NOW: (for Win7. Other systems will have similar files)
From file explorer, navigate to use c:\users\YourAccount
(assuming your system drive is c:\") and delete the folder: .frostwire5
Restart FrostWire and be alert for any error indications.

That may get you going.

The difference there is probably java or a malware blocker.

Update java and make sure that any security software is allowing FrostWire.

Follow these steps in sequence...

What is the same? Any error indications. And 5.3.7 is out now. Do a revo uninstall...
Here is a portable version of Revo: http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/ ... r_portable
NOW: (for Win7. Other systems will have similar files)
From file explorer, navigate to use c:\users\YourAccount (assuming your system drive is c:\")
    and delete the folder: .frostwire5

Do another Java check... I had to do an update today. I'm wondering if their last one was less than perfect.....

If all of that is good AND you are not behind a router, you might suspect that your ISP is blocking the standard FrostWire port. In that case you can change it in tools>options>advanced>firewall by selecting manual port forward. I've been using 16800, but supposedly my ISP isn't blocking anything. You could try 80, 443, 900, 110, or 79, which is the old finger server.

Now, Download FrostWire, again, from http://frostwire.com
Reinstall the newly downloaded version and hope for the best.

I don't recall what your exact problem is and this thread is too messy to try to follow. I DO wish you'd be concise and tell me what is happening in each post. Tell me what you have done and the effect of each action. Tell me any messages and the symptoms of the problem. Still the same doesn't tell me much.

I'm not familiar with Vista, but I know it had a lot of problems. It is possible that the current versions will never run on a Vista OS, I honestly don't know.

Your original post said it wanted to update. Is that still the problem?

It could be that your router simply does not handle UPnP properly, so do try port forwarding. This site may help you, there.

Ok... today i seem to be able to run 5.3.7 and everything appears to be working fine

on startup, i am informed that a MAJOR update has been downloaded (YouTube Integration...)

Would i like to install.. YES.

Frostwire shuts down, windows asks for permission to continue... yes

Then another windows advice screen.... 'The fastest file sharing Application on Earth has stopped working'
A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify if a solution is available.

So long as i select NO to the install everything is as normal

With the exception of now being able to start 5.3.7, this was my original question

Thanks

My apologies.... I have now encountered another problem.

For no apparent reason, Frostwire takes 100% control of my processor necessitating a forced shutdown thru task manager (which takes about a minute to access).

Task manager indicates that FW is utilising 91 - 98% and their is no downloading in progress

Try allowing it to run for 15 or so minutes and see if that CPU utilization returns to a reasonable value. I seem to recall experiencing something like that with one of the installs. If it does not, terminate it and check java again. If you need an update, do so.

That may solve the problem.

Have you malware checked lately? You do seem to be having a lot of strange problems? FrostWire should NOT be this hard!

ok have done the malware check which was all ok

java is ok

frostwire is taking over 100% of my cpu as soon as i try a search. When i cancel the search things go back to normal.
while downloading processor usage is back up again.

My internet connection drops in and out while downloading and after closing frostwire i have to disconnect and reconnect from my LAN

Have you done the revo uninstall?
Have you deleted .frostwire
Fresh install?
Java current?
Firewall and malware blockers off or allowing FW?
If all that's good, there would be some component in your computer that is causing FW to hang in some sort of timing loop. Since you said you are running Vista, I'm not sure where to look next.

Are you aware the 5.3.7 is out? It is supposed to fix hangs. Maybe your looping problem is solved too.
