I have written cobol modules that could be called by ALC routines and ALC modules that could be dynamically loaded into cobol working storage. If you understand the interface protocols, you can interface any language to any language. It all comes down to the calling standards. The bottom line is that it's all just ones and zeros.

Et tu? I used to write assembly code (a lost art) and put it Cobol working storage and then branch to it in Cobol program. It was fun for me but a b..ch to maintain for the maintenance people, hehe.
Jill broke her finger today, but on the other hand she was completely fine.

We did it for efficiency! The main program could take an hour to compile while I could tweak the ALC module in minutes to get it do do what was needed. It was oriented to record selection and was very easy to modify. The master file was 21 volumes of tape, and this little goodie could write selected records to disk for later processing. Beat a recompile every time you needed a "quick" record extraction!
