Frostwire locks up

Postby jeffncris » Fri Nov 06, 2009 7:27 am

hi guys,
i've got the latest version of Frostwire, running on a Vista Home Premium 64 bit system. intially everything works fine, however after about 10 minutes it just locks up, downloads stop, nothing happens when I click on anything, can't turnn it off, etc. if i open another instance, the downloads pick up where they left off for anoother 10 minutes or so and it happens again! I have to reboot to get rid of it, then start all over again. I've been using forstwire for a few years and I've never seen this before. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi,

You say you uninstalled and reinstalled ... could you try this unless it is what you have tried already:

Completely remove all traces of Java and Frostwire. To do this use Revo Uninstaller or a similar program since Windows uninstaller fails to do the job thoroughly.

Before doing this ensure you have a back up of the files in your save and shared folders, or at least remove them to your desktop or somewhere similar, just to be on the safe side.

Then install Java from HERE using the offline installer and finally Frostwire from the FrostWire.com link above.

If that fails to help please advise the specs of your computer .. Speed RAM etc and also let us know if you run many other programs along with Frostwire, and if so which?

Thanks, I tried what you said, same result. Frostwire totally locked up after about 5 minutes. I have a pentium Dual core E6300 @ 2.80GHz, 6 GB ram, 1 TB hard drive. On startup I am running zone alrm free, avast free, any dvd, just normal run of the mill stuff, nothing exotic. This is a new computer for me, just got it a rew days ago so the frostwire was a clean install. When the program locks, I can still access the internet however it seems to be much slower. I tried to end the program with ctrl-alt-del, end program, but even that will not work. I have to shut the computer off manually, nothing happens when I try to shut down windows normally. I hit close and the computer just does nothing. Very confusing, and I can't download!

Thanks for any suggestions....

I also right clicked on the icon and ran as administrator, same thing happened. I'm gonna try another file sharing app to see what happens....

Well, it happened with the other app too, EXACTLY the same thing. So I guess I'm looking at a Vista 64 bit/software compatability problem? Anyone else out there with similar problems?

hi jeffncris,

having fun yet? i run XP and have had a similar issue, not the same, just similar.

i cant get a fix for it, however, if you do your ctrl, alt, del. go to processes. click twice in the cpu box, to get the high numbers to stay up the top.

when your computer freezes up, look and see if java is locked using 95% or more.
if it is, what happens on my comp is, something other than frostwire tries using java and the comp just freezes, sometimes for 5 minutes, sometimes for over 24hrs. sometimes three times in one day, then no prob's for three months. when java is locked at 98%, automatic updates are the worst culprit, because you dont see them use java, another indicator is if you go to internet explorer when java is 98% and it either freezes or takes over a minute to open.
the only way i know of to solve my problem is turn FW off then back on.

hope you can get it sorted.

Thanks,
I gave that a try but the same thing happened, without the indications of a java problem like you had. I am waiting on my windows 7 upgrade to arrive, hopefully that will fix it??? I'm at my wits end.

Hi again .. Frostwire 4.18.4 has just been released and may cure your problems. Use of Revo Uninstaller as i suggested previously may be needed again ... let us know how you get on.

Have you defragmented your machine recently btw?

Thanks, I used Revo uninstaller and then installed the latest version. After about 30 minutes it locked. Do you think the Windows 7 upgrade I have ordered will solve my problem?

My windows upgrade should arrive in the mail on the 18th, then we'll see what happens. Not really sure at this point however it can't get any worse!
